My main area of interest is Computational Design Optimization, in which numerical optimization algorithms are employed in the engineering design process. Both shape and topology optimization are of interest; however, of particular interest is conceptual design using thousands to millions of design variables, which is possible (only) by employing gradient-based algorithms combined with adjoint-based computations of design sensitivities. Mostly, the target is either acoustic or electromagnetic devices such as antennas, microwave devices, and loudspeaker components, or fluid mechanics applications, such as the design of wall structures to delay laminar-to-turbulent transition.
