About me
Alp Yurtsever is an Assistant Professor of Optimization and Machine Learning at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University in Sweden, supported by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). He received his PhD in Computer and Communication Sciences (EDIC) from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where his thesis was recognized with distinction. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS).
He leads the Mathematical Programming Group at the department. His research focuses on developing theory and algorithms for challenging optimization problems in data science and machine learning. His areas of interest include implicit regularization, semidefinite programming, classical-quantum hybrid optimization methods, distributed learning, operator splitting techniques, and adaptive optimization algorithms.
